Self-ligating braces are the same size as conventional braces and are available in metal, ceramic or clear brackets. They tend to be more comfortable and require fewer adjustments.

There are two types of self-ligating braces: passive brackets and active brackets.

Passive brackets utilize a smaller size archwire, meaning less friction and more freedom for teeth to move.  Active brackets utilize a thicker archwire, delivering more pressure to the teeth and moving them more efficiently to their correct positions.

The benefits of self-ligating braces include:

  • Less chair time, fewer visits to the orthodontist
  • Less friction and discomfort
  • Less visible, as there are no colored bands, elastics, or metal ties
  • Easier to clean
